As a cooperative industry-university research center at Rutgers University, WINLAB offers unique academic research opportunities to students at all levels including those enrolled in undergraduate, Master’s and PhD programs. Our goal is to provide specialized training and research experience in the wireless and networking fields. Since its inception in 1989, the center has graduated over 140 M.S. and PhD students in conjunction with the ECE (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and CS (Computer Science) departments. The vast majority of WINLAB graduates continue to work in advanced wireless/networking technology companies (such as Qualcomm, Alcatel-Lucent, Intel, InterDigital and Aruba Networks), and some have also gone on to become Professors at colleges or universities.

For undergraduate students, WINLAB offers an annual summer internship program which provides hands-on research training on current topics in wireless technology. The program typically accepts about 15-20 undergraduate students from Rutgers and other universities each year, and students entering the program are offered a modest stipend and given the opportunity to participate in a number of ongoing research projects. Exceptional students may be able to continue on longer term research projects during the year by individual arrangements with WINLAB faculty.

For Master’s degree graduate students in the ECE program at Rutgers, WINLAB offers a limited number of part-time research positions that support M.S. thesis research through involvement with ongoing research projects at the center. M.S. students at Rutgers may also apply for the annual summer internship program which supports summer research on an ongoing project at the center.

For PhD students in the ECE and CS programs at Rutgers, WINLAB offers a unique environment for conducting thesis research on an advanced topic in the wireless communications, networking and mobile computing fields. PhD students who quality for the WINLAB program are generally supported as Graduate Research Assistants subject to available grant funding. Students in the PhD program have the opportunity to work on industry projects and collaborative center projects in addition to conducting thesis research with one or more of the faculty members affiliated with the center.
