ABOUT ME

I am passionate in conducting research on human-centric energy-efficient mobile and sensing systems that involve sensors, mobile devices and cloud services, with a special focus on passive sensing, which does not require active human participation, to monitor their physical, social and cognitive activities towards better wellbeing. My skill set broadly spans the areas of mobile and ubiquitous computing, embedded systems, wireless networking, machine learning, signal processing, and human computer interaction.

I received my Ph.D. at WINLAB/ECE of Rutgers University in 2014. I have also spent several summers at Samsung Research America, AT&T Labs Research and Technicolor Labs. Before joining Rutgers, I received B.E. (Highest Hons.) from Department of Automation, Shanghai University in 2008 .

PROJECTS

RF-based Device-free Localization Knowing how many people and find where they are in indoor environments without requiring them to carry any devices can enhance everyday life, such as elder-care, rescue operations, security enforcement and building occupancy statistics. We observe and take advantage of how human subjects absorb or reflect the ambient radio power - change the radio propagation accordingly when they are in different locations, and derive unobtrusive and energy-efficient algorithms to accurately count and localize number of people. We have validated this technique through extensive experiments in different home and office settings with low-power radio sensors infrastructure deployment. See our IPSN'13, IPSN'12 paper.

Speaker counting on Smartphones Knowing how many people are talking can enable many scalable social sensing applications, such as crowd estimation, social isolation detection and audience engagement estimation. It is challenging to accurately and efficiently estimate the number of speakers during in conversations without any prior knowledge of the participants and their speech characteristics. We designed and implemented Crowd++, a mobile device based unsupervised speaker counting service. Crowd++ can work in different environmental settings: from tables to pockets, from quite indoor to noisy outdoors, and it can last more than one day on modern smartphones. See our UbiComp'13 paper and check it out through github.

Transmit-only protocol Changing batteries in your devices is annoying; changing batteries in 100 sensors throughout your home is impossible. Traditional wireless protocols care more about data connectivity than power consumption, but if we want a world with tiny sensors then our wireless protocols need to use tiny batteries and still last for years. Our solution to this problem is a transmit-only protocols that exploits the capture effect to mitigate packet collisions. This is a zero-overhead protocol for the transmitters, so our sensors last for years on a single coin cell battery. See our MobiHoc'10 paper.

Accurate Angular and Distance Ranging Using Radio-Optical Link Accurately estimating relative angles and ranges information between nearby devices is a hard problem, yet of importance to many context-aware applications such as augmented reality, autonomous automotive systems, smart manufacturing systems, etc. Existing indoor localization techniques could not meet the applications' requirements given the resource constraints. We have started exploring a technique that integrates wireless wearable devices with hardware adjuncts to provide spatial context information at centimeter-level accuracy from objects and people for indoor environment. See our MobiSys'13 demo.

Owlplatform With all of the hype about the "Internet of Things" it would be nice if you could put your things online. This is a long-term project with the goal of creating a software stack that makes it easy to make physical spaces, like your house, smarter. This problem can be divided into several areas: sensing, data collection, data processing, and actuation on that data. Owl platform focuses on the last three areas, and is hardware agnostic, allowing you to choose your own sensing solution. Interested? Check it out and see our HotPlanet'13 and iThings'13 paper.
