Before coming to WINLAB in 1994, Dick spent 30
years at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where he was involved in the design of
cellular systems and Cordless Telephones. He was head of mobile systems
engineering for AMPS, the first cellular system in the US, and served on the
EIA committee that drafted the rules for nationwide cellular compatibility. As
R&D Director for AT&T's cordless telephone business unit, he led the
development of the 5000 series of cordless telephone, and was responsible for
its initial manufacture. For his work in cellular and cordless telephony, he
has received the National Medal of Technology, the Alexander Graham Bell Medal
and the Industrial Research Institute Achievement Award. He is a member of the
National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of Bell Labs and the IEEE.
